Calgon is a registered trademark of different corporations. The original product of the company consists in a powdered sodium hexametaphosphate, witch in water would complex with ambient calcium ion and with other cations have the role to prevent the formation of unwanted salts and interference of the cations with the action of the soap and detergents.
I know that this is a hard to understand definition, in other words he name of the company says it all calgon = calcium gone. The products of the company that were originally promoted, were the products for general use in bathing and cleaning and afterwards starting from the original products, the company created derivative products.

The base of the brand was in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, witch released the first Calgon product of the company, the water softener, in 1933. In 1968, the company was acquired by Merck and later was broken up and sold off.
The company was divided in the fallowing parts: Calgon water softener – was sold to Reckitt Benckiser, the dishwasher detergent of Reckitt Benckiser was sold in the Continental Europe and is known by the name of Calgonit: Calgon bath and beauty products was sold to Coty Inc and in 2007 acquired by Ascendia Brands Ilex Capital purchased the product line of the company and the rights to the name for an approximately sum of $ 4,2 million in the year 2008; Calgon Carbon Corporation was acquired by its management after a leverage layout in 1985 and bought public in 1987; Calgon Water Management was sold in June 1993 for a considerable amount of money, for $ 307,5 million to English China Clays: Calgon Vestal Laboratories was sold to Bristol-Myers Squibb for the sum of $ 261,5 million in November 1994 and in 1996, the company was acquired by Steris Corporation; Nu-Calgon

The product that made the company known all across Europe, is the Calgon bath product, Calgon water softener that is advertised in the majority of the European countries and has who has the same jingle translated into the languages of the countries where it is promoted.
The jingle of the Calgon water softener is “washing machines live longer with Calgon”. Does it seem familiar to you?
