You don't have a clipper and you are doing your manicure using scissors or just by picking the nails. This is wrong and you have to stop doing it. You can seriously damage the nail and end up with a severe infection. It seems that the clipper was invented in 1896 by Chapel Carter. Hundred years later the number of nail clippers sold all around the world was bigger than that of living people.

Choose the nail cutter that best suits you. The instrument is made of metal and has a curved or a straight edge. The first will cut your nail straight, while the second one lets you cut a round shape. When selecting a clipper, you have to take into account the dimensions of your nails. If your clipper is bigger you risk cutting your nails too short or hurting the skin around them. Children need also adequate nail clippers, designed especially for them. These types are usually enclosed in plastic.

The clipper's design should be very comfortable, for the instrument to be easy to use. There are three types of nail clippers: the compound lever type, the plier type and recently, it has been introduced, the push button model. Usually they have as attachment a special tool for cleaning dirty nails and a small file.

The hygiene of the fingernail clippers is very important, so keep it clean and protected form fungal or bacterial spores. After each use, wash them in warm water with some drops of soap in it then dry it well to prevent metal deterioration. Store the instruments in a safe place, keeping them away from children reach.

First, soak your fingers in a bowl of warm water with some scented oil or in tea-tree oil. Find a comfortable position when you are about to use the clippers. Open the nail clippers by sliding aside its handle. Place the blade over the white of your nail and push the down. Cut the nail straight from one motion. Do not harm the corners of the nail. Smooth them using a file. If you clip them you may catch an infection, or they may grow in the nail.

There are some disadvantages of nail clippers. They leave sharp parts, so you have to carefully file the nails. They are not equipped with any depths guides, so there is the risk you cut your nails too short. An other uncomfortable aspect is that nail clippings can scatter in unpredictable directions, so you have to clean up the place after the operation ended.
