Choose a clear or neutral base coat. White, beige or light colors are appropriate for nail art, since they emphasize the design. Apply a coat of nail polish and let it dry. Piercing for instance looks great, but it can weaken the nail. Before doing it, apply at least two coats of polish and try not to make the hole too close to the sides or the tip of your nail. The right place for the hole is the upper section, so it could be filed without cutting short all your nails.

You can also glue on the nails the designs you love. In this case you have to paint and let dry the nails first. A decoupage is also a challenging idea, but it suits only artificial nails. You can cut a picture of your favorite magazine, shape it to your nail’s size, then glue it. Instead of paper you can use a piece of cloth…everybody will ask for your designer’s phone number.

Don’t be afraid of experimenting colors. Red looks great over gold, and silver is magical on black coat. Before mixing colors, let dry each coat of polish. Fake tattoos may be used as special designs. Paint nails in your favorite color then cut the pattern you want and apply on the nail. Two coats of clear polish will fix it there for a long time.

Metallic eye shadow over still wet polish, covered with clear enamel is also an interesting and great looking idea. Nail designs look on short nails as great as on long ones.
