Fingernail Growth

The old proverb saying “you are what you eat” is more than a proverb. Fingernails prove this fact. The nail is formed of six parts; it has the root, the nail bed, the nail plate, the cuticle, perionychium and hyponychium. Each one of these parts has its own role in the fingernail growth.

The root or the matrix should be kept always clean and be taken care of. It is the thing from where the nail grows. It is strictly bound to the nail bed, which has to maintain a certain hydratation for the nail to have a normal growth. In other case the nail will not grow properly and it will be cosmetically bad looking. The nail plate that is the actual fingernail is made out of keratin. When it is of a pinkish color it means it is healthy, as this is the color it should have. The cuticle serves as a nail protection, therefore, one should never cut it very much, and it can just be pushed backwards with some special fingernail stick.

The growing part of the nail is the only alive part of it. It is found under the skin, under the epidermis. The fingernail growth is similar to the hair growth, as they both contain keratin. I very young children, the nail growth at an average of one millimeter per month, at almost fourteen years old they grow at an average of two-three millimeters per month and as you get older, after the age of forty they go back to their beginnings, when you were little, and grow one millimeter per month.

If you lose your fingernail for good, it will take between three and six months to have it back again. The time for growing the toenail lost is between six and twelve months long.
