Hairstyles of the 1920’s

There is no woman who can’t remember the hairstyles of the 1920’s. Their elegance and glamour had survived in our memories since then. Some hairstylists are trying even in our days to recreate those classy headdresses. The story begins in 1915, when Castle bob cut her hair for a convenience. In that time, she didn’t know what fashion she had set up regarding the hairstyles of the 1920’s.

The bob haircut wasn’t that complicated, but it sure had a very sophisticated air: the medium hair arrives at the bottom of the ears, and it could be worn either with soft curls or simply brushing off the hair of the forehead.Once with the advent of the bob haircut, a real trend was established in the 1920’s. You could have seen women with short, but elegant hair, and of course, the designers and fashion magazines promoted it even more. For example, on May the 1st 1920, in the Saturday Evening Post had appeared an article which contained a beautiful story at that time. It was about a very sweet and pretty girl, who was kind of naïve, and once she got in a barber shop, she become a beautiful but eccentric young lady, due to her bob cut and to her make-up. This story was appreciated by all the women and of course, it had become a real model for all of them.

In 1921, the madness begun: fallowing the most famous female examples of the world, many women started to change their appearance, so that they could have look like Coco Channel or Clara Bow as much as possible.Although it was a real hit in the fashion world, some women weren’t very decided regarding their hair. The problem is the same as in our days: you have a long beautiful hair and suddenly, all around you, you see a lot of pretty girls wearing non haircuts. And then you start asking yourself if that haircut is the new trend, if you should wear it too since everybody already does, and of course, if this new haircut is worth, since you have to give up your long hair.

Rumor has it that the most suitable for cutting a woman’s hair at that time were the men. In barbers shop, there were lots of women who preferred to have their hair done by a man, rather that one of their female stylists. It seems that men really got skilled in making a bob haircut, fact that brought them a lot of money. The barbers shop was full and lots of clients wanted the same hairdo! A report made in New York City in those years showed that more than 2,000 women per day were very decided in wearing the bob haircut. And for those who were afraid of trying a short hair, there was another possibility: to roll their hair and make it shorter, and of course, when they would have got tired of this imitation of bob haircut, they could have come back to their long style.

But with the time, other complicated hairdos arrived and the bob haircut didn’t survive more that let’s say, ten years. Although, it had became a real phenomenon in the fashion world, since shampoos and hair tricks had appeared in order to keep the bob haircut fresh as long as possible. But you never know when the fashion could come back…
