Lipstick On His

There are many sayings or expressions nowadays with the word ‘lipstick’ probably because it is very commonly used especially since it became so popular, for example lipstick building (it is a skyscraper in New York City that has the color and the shape of a lipstick tube), lipstick camera (a little camera that has the shape and size of a lipstick), lipstick feminism (a kind of feminism that excepts some ideas that traditional feminists dismiss), lipstick goby (a species of Gobiidae fish), lipstick lesbian (lesbian or bisexual women who exhibit feminine gender characteristics) and lipstick pickup (an electric equipment used in the build-up of electric guitars).

A very interesting expression related to lipstick that caught my attention is ‘lipstick on his collar’. When most people hear this immediately a picture pops into their mind o a man whose collar is stained with lipstick. It is most natural to visualize the things we say or that the others say, but let’s see what this expression refers to.

You might say that it is very obvious what the expression mean: the man in question has been with a woman and they are intimate enough for the woman to kiss him on various body parts suck as the neck and so she might have left a stain. There might be nothing out of the ordinary in case of a single man, but usually the expression is used in case of men who have wives and let’s just say that it wasn’t their wife who left the mark. Yes, it is used for those men who cheat on their wife.

The origins of the expression are very obvious. Since lipstick has been around there was always the possibility that women might stain others and if a woman found a lipstick stain on the shirt of their husband or boyfriend they could be sure of his infidelity. In these days if somebody says ‘John has lipstick on his collar’ there is no need for real stain, everybody around knows what the speaker refers to.

There are some, let’s say, more intelligent or sleek women who want to get a man that is already committed. They know that it is a very handy solution to get some lipstick on his shirt that his partner will know it’s not hers, so for sure there will be some problems, they might even break up.

In case a woman finds such a stain and she knows that there is somebody else who would like to be with her boyfriend or husband she should take into consideration that nothing has really happened and the stain is only a part of a plan. Even so there are very few women who can forgive infidelity and most get very upset even with the idea of it. I would advise men to be faithful to their partners and in case they think that they can’t it is better to put an end to the relationship before anybody gets hurt. This advice is applicable for women as well.
