Since the early ages fingernails have proved to be a very important part of one’s body. However, nowadays, that one has to face with so many problems and has so many things to do, and a very active life, one cannot grow such long fingernails as women before used to.
Anyhow, the longest fingernails record started in India, when an unnamed Chinese priest grew his fingernails of up to 22 ¾ inches long. Since then many men and women tried to get into the Guinness Book, with their long fingernails records. The next in line surpassing this anonymous priest was Romesh Sharma, an Indian, whose nails totaled 52.5 inches long, just at his left hand.
The record was continued by another Indian that grew his fingernails of up to 55.5 inches, as well at his left hand – Murari Mohan Aditya. He then continued to leave his fingernail to grow until they reached as far as 108.5 inches long. The year he arrived at this record with the longest fingernails, was 1982. However, in 1983, he was surpassed by the Shridhar Chillal of India, who had a total length of 116.5 inches at his left hand. When he appeared in the Guinness Book, in 1988, he had a total of 242.25 inches fingernail long, at his left hand. As the fingernails of Chilall were so long, they caused him permanent damage to his left hand.

As one can probably see, the record, back then in the days was kept mainly by men. The reason for this is that men did not have so many things to do around the house as women did, men could handle with one hand as well for the things they had to do, men fingernails grow faster than those of women and as well the climate these men lived in, was appropriate for the fingernails growth, as the hotter the climate is, the faster the fingernails grow.
Anyhow, these being said, a woman tried to surpass all her other competitors and started growing her own longest fingernails. This woman is an American – Lee Redmond, which as well lives in the hotter part of America, and has been growing her fingernails since 1979. Even though she was and still is a married person, she had children and then grandchildren, she managed to do her work around the house, play with her grandchildren, drive the car, take care of her ill husband and as well dress up by herself.

She had an intention of cutting her fingernails off in 2006, when she saw that her husband that suffered from Alzheimer was hard to handle, but then she made up her mind and tried to do her best in providing the special care for him. She entered in the 2001 Guinness Book edition, when her fingernails measured a total length of 21 ft and 9 inches. Anyhow, she continued growing her fingernails until they arrived to 28 feet long fingernails. Nowadays, the woman with the longest fingernails in the world has lost them in a car accident in February 2009, when she was ejected out from the vehicle. The good part in all of this is that just her fingernails suffered, as she suffered no concussion or anything.
Though she remembers with joy the period that was when she had so long fingernails, as it took her as much as 30 years to grow them so long, she cannot possibly repeat the action, as she is not likely to live another 30 years, and also fingernails grow much slower when getting old.
Nice as it may be, growing long fingernails requires not only a lot of patience but as well eating a proper diet for them not to break, being careful when doing your work around the house, dressing yourself, etc.
