Longest Fingernails Record
Human nails are often compared to the claws of animals, used in attacking enemies or killing prey. People don’t use their fingernails for something like this anymore. Nowadays nails are rather an accessory, for women especially, being polished and decorated with various designs.
A similarity between human nails and animal claws is that they consist of the same protein, called keratin. There three important parts of a nail:- cuticle – a small skin growing right at the base of the nail; – nail plate- the area, free of nerve endings, that grows beyond the fingertip; – nail bed – a connective texture, with nerve endings, that grows from the finger, and forms the nail.

Nails grow much slower than hair, approximately 3 mm per month. If torn, a nail will need about 6 months to completely grow back. Of course, nails like other parts of the human body, made subject of world records. It all began in 1955, when a Chinese priest, remained anonymous, let his nails grow until they reached more than half meter. His record was surpassed in 1972, when Romesh Sharma form Delhi, India, reached the length of 1.33 meters after 10 years of growth.
Three years after a new record was established by another Indian, this time from Calcutta. His name was Murari Mohan Aditya and his left hand nails measured 1.4 meters. In 1982 his nails reached almost 2.76 meters length. Romesh Sharma didn’t give up the run for record, and after 12 years of growth, he was declared the man with the longest single nail, 0.62 meters.
Afterwards, the record was hold for 20 years by Shridhar Chillal. In 2000, because his fingernails were deformed, he cut his nails. He had long nails only on his left hand. Another longest fingernails record was established by an Indian Photographer from Poona. He refused to cut his nails for almost fifty years. His thumbnail measured almost 1.5 meters length and resembled a colored spiral made of tortoise shell. Later on, he put his nails up for auction.
A Chinese man, Li Jian Ping wanted to surpass the Indian’s record. In 50 years his nail reached the length of only one meter. Also Barbara Wing from Salt Lake City is holder of the longest fingernails record. Her nails were remarkable for their look. For 50 years, she let her nails grow and continuously applied on them nail art designs. She was very proud of her 10 Jazzmen painted on her almost 18 centimeters nails.

She suffered a lot, when implied in a car accident lost her fingernails. Still she admitted it become easier to do things. She remembered that, although her nails were very long, she did by herself all the house hold cleaning, she took care of her ill husband and even managed to cut her grandchildren hair.
