Do you know what a rainbow lipstick party is? The first picture that pops into the mind of most people is a girls’ makeup party, but in fact it is nothing of the sort. Actually it is a lot more shocking. A short definition of such a party is that girls and boys gather to a place and girls wear different shades of lipstick (such as blue, green, orange, indigo and so on) and the point is to mark the boys’ penis with the most colors, to it will form a rainbow.
The stories tell us about different kind of parties. At some it is said that they turn off the lights and while it is dark the girls mark the guys. Then they turn on the lights and the boys try to figure out which girl left which mark. Others upgrade the idea and it is said that there is a contest between the boys. The guy that has the most colors wins and can choose between the girls. Another idea involves a girl winner as well. The girl, who leaves the most marks, wins. In this case the winners win each other. Another version of the contest says that the winner among the girls is the one that leaves mark on the top of the rainbow.
It is debated whether these are real parties or just another sexual urban myth, but no matter what the truth is, it sure became the subject of many discussions. Specialists say that these re only stories, to reassure the parents. They claim that there are several mistakes in the story. For example what would drive a teenage girl to engage in such activities? Another one is that it is very unlikely that boys will examine each other’s penis in order to find out what kind of rainbows they have. Regarding the first ‘mistake’ I think that I have the answer and probably most people have already thought about this: curiosity. Teenagers often do things simply out of curiosity and the thing seems even more appealing if it is forbidden.
The term rainbow lipstick party appeared in early 2000’s and since then it became very well-known among teenagers. Surveys show that the vast majority of teenagers between 13 and 16 years know what it means, so parents have another thing in plus to worry about.
Some people say that the point of creating such a legend is to make parents talk to their children about sex and not only by telling them about the flowers and the bees. In our days teenagers get a lot more information and they can understand things better than in the past, so it is time to find new ways of telling them about more delicate things. I think that the most important thing is to be sincere and it is also important to make taboos disappear within a family. This way teenagers would be a lot easier to communicate with and there wouldn’t be a barrier between the children and the parents.
