Split Fingernails
Split Fingernails are most of the time the result of repetitive or prolonged contact with water. Nail polish remover can also contribute to split fingernails. Split Fingernails are not usually a sign of vitamin, mineral or nutritional deficiencies.
As our skin gets drier due to the water or natural aging, our fingernails and toenails tend to split more often. The medical term for this is onychoschizia and the splitting can happen because the nail plates are brittle, soft, thin, frail, or have ridges. Women tend to suffer more from split, cracked, broken nails maybe because the main cause of splitting nails is soaking water. Another cause of Split Fingernails is accidentally hitting them and to avoid splitting them one must avoid the things that cause them.
The first prevention against Split Fingernails is to wear cotton lined rubber gloves while using soap and water for prolonged periods or when washing harsh chemicals. Secondly, use nail polish remover no more than twice a month and avoid those containing acetone. Thirdly, rub moisturizing lotion into your fingernails after washing your hands and after removing nail polish.
If the splitting does not improve after all these advice, then one must ask the doctor for additional suggestions because there can be more causes for the Split Fingernails than we can assume. And there is nothing more recommended in any case of body or nail dysfunction than to see a doctor that is specialized on that particular field and to take the treatment he will recommend. The doctor’s opinion is always the one that should matter the most in any circumstance.
