The’80

After a time of straight hair and hippie look, the Americans especially got tired of simplicity and they evolved towards eccentric. The keyword for 1980’s hairstyles is surely “big” but “crazy” too. Although these haircuts were adopted mostly by actors and actresses, you could see also normal and unpopular people wearing them.

It seems that the big hair wasn’t worn since the 17th century, and in the ’80, some hairstylists wanted to reinvent this type of hairdo, and not only: create a variety of big hairstyles, more complex and crazier than before! And it was, indeed, a real madness, since both women and men were wearing it! Actually, it seemed that they were competing one against the other in order to have a bigger hairstyle.

One of the most popular hairstyle between girls was still the ponytail, practically and adored by teenagers especially and women who had to work. But for those who wanted to follow the fashion, the asymmetrical haircut was invented. This hairdo was wearen first of all by TV stars and singers. But the trend had spread like wildfire between young people and fashion victims of that time. And as a girl, you had a lot of choises and examples to follow: Cindy Lauper or Siouxsie Sioux.

This means that if you were a fan of Siouxsie Sioux, you would have dyed your hair black and you would have used a lot of hairspray in order to get a look like your idol. But if you would have admired Cindy Lauper, you would have picked an orange dye and a curly look. And nobody could have blamed you: that was the fashion of the ’80!As you can see, the bands of that time inspired a lot the hairstylists and the tendaces between teenagers. The boys were influenced a lot by singers from Guns n’ Roses or White Snake.

They would have done even the impossible to look like the ones they were listening to. These boys also known as the fans of the heavy metal, have adopted a hairstyle known later as „the hair metal” , and they were using more hairspray than their girlfriends in order to make their hairdos at home. And they were spending a lot of time in front of the mirror also!

Women always took care of their appearance and hair, but in the ’80 the men were also obsessed by their look. Actually, these years have a great importance in politics and fashion also, without mentioning the hairstyles. Everyone wanted to be in trends, both the women and men, but a little later, a new word appeared in our vocabulary: the metrosexuality, and it was used for men who payed to much attention to the way they look.
We could never say that the ’80 hadn’t a great importance and influence upon our history of fashion. If we would ask our parents, they would tell us their beautiful memories linked to their past and their crazy hairstyle.
