Toddler Pretend Lipstick

I think that we all had experiences with makeup when we were toddlers. In that period makeup seems to be something magical and in the same time something mysterious because it is forbidden to play with. At that age most children would like to get their hands on their mother’s makeup and try it on, just to see how it feels. They take advantage of every situation that allows them to get near makeup.

Mothers don’t let their children to wear makeup (at least most mothers) because of various reasons. They say that makeup is not for children because it ruins their natural beauty. Besides this it is a well known fact that children are more sensitive and this is true for their skin as well. Makeup can harm them in some ways and mothers are trying to avoid such situations.

There are some methods that can help the parents keep their children away from makeup. One method might be to buy the children lots of toys. Little girls usually like to have makeup sets. These are made of plastic most of the times so if they ‘apply’ it, there will be no effect and so the toddler can pretend wearing lipstick without any consequences. According to my experiences this is enough for children to stop wanting what they can’t have. If they get a substitute that resembles the real thing, they will be satisfied with it and even happy. At that age it is easy to make them believe things and this is a very helpful tool in the hands of parents.

If the child still isn’t satisfied with the toys the parents bought, it might be a good solution to buy her some kind of lip balm that has no color and it even moisturizes her lips. Most children are happy to get something of the sort because they feel that they are more mature and they can pretend more easily that they are older than they really are.

I think the most useful thing to do is to talk to the children. I know that toddlers are considered to be too young to talk to, but you might be amazed how perceptive they are and if you seriously and sincerely talk to them and explain why they can’t wear makeup they will be satisfied with the answer (at least for a while, then the whole thing will start over). If you give them some rational reasons (not just ‘Because’) they will understand.

The best thing is not to forbid the children this straight but to offer them an alternative without screaming and yelling. Then the toddler pretend to wear lipstick more happily and they will be calm. They won’t be looking for any situation when the parents aren’t looking to sneak into their room. It would be time for parents to understand that although toddlers are young, they are not stupid and they can understand many things if it is explained to them in a language they can understand.
