What Are Fingernails Made Of

As far as the nail anatomy concerns, a fingernail is just like the other external terminal phalanges on fingernails and on toenails, at any other mammal. They are as well similar to the claws, existent in any other living creatures as they have the same role.

First of all when one puts himself the question what are fingernails made of, one will see that the material the fingernails are made of is keratin. The keratin is a tough material that exists a well in our hairs but in the cow’s hoof and horns as well.  Keratin is the protein that allows the nail to grow beautifully.

But as the keratin is the material of what are fingernails made of, the fingernails growth is not such a simple process. Therefore, the structure of the fingernails does not imply only the external part which is the fingernail plate, made of keratin, but there are other important parts that help in the fingernail plate development. The growth of the nail starts from the fingernail matrix that is because the matrix is the only part of the nail that actually is connected to some living blood cells. The new cells are produced in the matrix, and then released to develop to the new nail plate. They become hardened and compacted and then flatten out from the standard fingernail shape.

As the normal growth of a fingernail is of one tenth of inch per month, if you make a math calcs, you will see that it will take just about six months time for a fully fingernail to regrow. Anyhow, the growth process of a fingernail is dependent on various factors, just like in your hair growth process. Is dependable on age, race, gender, climate of living, diet, and exercise level.

In order to maintain healthy beautiful fingernails, just like the ones you were born with, it is advisable to care for your fingernails. Therefore, one should trim them from time to time, and maintain them at an average level of growth, should intake a lot of protein and calcium in the diet, taken from food or multivitamin supplements; should protect one’s nails from chemical substances by wearing gloves all the time; should moisturize one’s hands every time one uses the hands for washing dishes doing housework etc; use a cuticle cream, from time to time, allow them to take a break from polishing.

Fingernails say a lot of our health but as well of our overall condition and character. Especially if you are a woman, it is best of having well taken care nails, as they are not just a mirror to your health but as well to your degree of care you daily take of yourself. It is useful to see that all the doctors have well taken care fingernails and very well trimmed as well.
