Fingernails have always been something one is proud of. Since the early beginnings, from the time of Hippocrates, the most known doctor scientists, fingernails were considered to have a say in our overall health issues. However, not every one of us is aware of this fact and most of the times, we do not even take a proper look at our fingernails, as we know that they are a dead “body” and they cannot affect any part of our body.




Taking a better look into how our fingernails look like one may notice some differentiations in the fingernails color, shape, thickness, smoothness. This is when; one should take some measures to reduce these signs and even to make them disappear for good.  One common fingernail disorder is the vertical fingernails ridges. What do vertical ridges in fingernails mean? In order to discover their true meaning one has to know what exactly caused them. Vertical fingernail ridges are lines that extend all the way from the cuticle to the top of your nail.

Causes of vertical fingernail ridges vary from less serious to serious ones. A very common cause, about what we cannot do anything, is the aging process. While all of us get some aging process results in our skin, hair, some of us may experience the possibility of growing vertical ridges on fingernails.  Another cause that may lead to vertical ridges on your fingernails may be some nutritional deficiency.

This happens as some of the vitamins from food are not very well assimilated in your body. If this is the case, one should take some vitamin supplements, under doctor prescription and as well try and eat as healthy as one can.  They may appear as well as a result of fingernail dryness and cuticle dryness. This is made from using too much chemicals and too much nail polish as well.

Apart from these nutritional and getting old causes, one may encounter some more serious causes like some kidney disorder. In this case, you actually have nothing else to do, but go and ask for a specialist advice, as he will be the only one capable of offering you the proper treatment. When the internal cause is treated and gone, the vertical ridge may not be sizable anymore.

As for the external causes, one can reduce the usage of chemicals and when doing work around the house, one should wear some protective gloves. In order to maintain the hydration of your hands, one should always use a hand & nails cream after one washes his hands; should as well start using a cuticle cream that will maintain their needing level of oil and be careful to lessen the nail polish usage.
