White Spots On Fingernails

White spots on fingernails are the most common discoloration of the nail, characterized by partial or total white coloration. This disease can be congenital (present from birth) or acquired. Congenital forms are submitted, and may be total or partial, and associated with certain birth defects or deafness. Acquired forms of leukonychia cause, most often, the nail base by trauma (for example excessive manicure) (matrix, angle), where the nail grows.

White color of the nail can follow physiological phenomena such as menstruation or strong stress, or after acute illness (such as myocardial infarction), digestive diseases (such as ulcerative colitis), skin diseases (like multiform erythem), or kidney disease. Also white spots on fingernails can be caused by infectious diseases (such as Zoster area, measles, tuberculosis, or syphilis), autoimmune or neuropathy diseases (like Hodgkin’s disease), metabolic disorders, peripheral neuropathy, psoriasis, and poisoning with arsenic.

White spots on fingernails may be apparent or real. The apparent form can be seen in cirrhosis when white opacities occur on the nail surface. Nails get a white aspect and the natural pinkish color is hidden. In uremia, we can meet nail “half-half”, in which proximal half is matte, and the distance – red or brown. Also, depending on the level of albumin serum, there may appear multiple parallel white bands on the nails’ surfaces.

True leukonychia is of several types:
White spots on fingernails – is a very rare disease. It is characterized by the appearance of white, milk, blue or ivory spots on the entire nail. Turbidity is variable. Usually, the rapid growth of the nail is associated with total leuconichia.
Plate, white spots on fingernails – this consists in the appearance of white horizontal bands on the blade nail. The strips are of 1-2 mm wide and usually located on the same level in all affected nails.

Pointed white spots on fingernails – is the emergence of white spots on nails of 1-3 mm, single or in groups. Some of these spots may enlarge over time.
Variegate white spots on fingernails – is characterized by the appearance on one or on more nails of irregular horizontal white lines.
Longitudinal white spots on fingernails – It shows the blade of one or more nail, a white-gray longitudinal line, of 1 mm wide.

Treatment: Usually, white spots disappear by itself as the nail grows. This can take up to 8 months (as finger nails grow by 0.3 cm per month). The best method of treatment remains prevention, which consists reducing the possibilities of trauma to the nails, and treating or eliminating other possible causes.

Nail care involves respecting several steps:

Wash your hands regularly and use a brush which removes dead cells;
Cut the corners and soften your nails for several minutes in warm water and remove cuticles;
File the edges, preferably in a specific direction, to avoid flaking;
Apply of two layers of nail varnish;
The application of moisturizers – never before using the lake (it will clear faster if nails are not completely dry).

Utensils that you use for nail maintenance must be kept in very good conditions. Avoid borrowing such items from another kit, because the danger of infection can occur at any time. If you count among those who have the habit to bite one’s nails, you can suppress the tic, by applying a particular nail varnish (anti-biting) – a solution that tastes absolutely repulsive, but that will prevent fingers stay in your mouth. Here’s how you can make an art of nail care. Whether you prefer to keep it short and not to apply a coat of varnish over them, whether you are pleased to invent all sorts of models for painting nails, it is important not to overlook.
